Sumatra Mandheling
North Sumatra • Wet-Hulled • Single Origin
Grown in the volcanic highlands of North Sumatra between 2,500–5,000 feet, this coffee takes its name from the Mandailing people of the region. It's produced using "Giling Basah," or wet-hulling — a traditional Indonesian processing method born out of necessity in the island's humid climate, and one that gives this coffee its unmistakable character.
Tasting Notes
Deep and earthy, with rich dark chocolate up front and a full, syrupy body that coats the palate. Notes of cedar and warm spice — think clove or nutmeg — add complexity, while a whisper of dried fruit lends subtle sweetness. Low acidity throughout makes for a smooth, mellow cup with a long, satisfying finish.
Why We Love It
The wet-hulling process is what sets Sumatran coffee apart. Beans are hulled at a higher moisture content than most origins, then finished drying afterward — a technique developed to work around Indonesia's rainy climate. The result is a heavier body, lower acidity, and those signature earthy, herbal notes that have made Sumatran coffee a favorite among lovers of bold, full-flavored cups.
